Presentación baras numericas / Number Rods presentation

(scroll down for English)

Material

10 barras numéricas de diferente largada.
1 x 10cm (roja)
1 x 20cm ( 10cm rojo, 10 cm azul)
1x 30cm( 10 cm rojo, 10 cm azul, 10 cm rojo)
1x 40cm ( 10 cm rojo, 10 cm azul , 10 cm rojo, 10 cm azul) y así sucesiva mente
1x 50cm
1x 60 cm
1x 70 cm
1x 80 cm
1x 90 cm
1x 100 cm

2 alfombras de Trabajo.

Propósito

Directo

Number Rods Presentation

Number rods are one of the first steps in Mathematics area found in a Montessori classroom , the aim of the number rods is to introduce the concept of number.

When we introduce a child to the concept of number we must considered that the child will be learning 3 different things.

The quantity
The name of the number
The symbol that represents the name and that quantity.

One of the differences between a traditional and a Montessori classroom in mathematics  is that concepts are presented concretely (materials that can be manipulated) and gradually the children will work towards the abstract (mental mathematical concept). The child's brain is still developing and it is not until after the child is 6 years old that he can fully understand an abstract concept.

For many children under the age of 6 the concept of quantity explained in a worksheet  with a drawing (example number 1 a drawing of 1 candy) is still very difficult to understand.

If you are homeschooler, or work in a traditional school you can make your own for less than 15 Euros. Click here for an easy tutorial.

Presentation

Material

10 wooden bars , diferent in lenght.

1 x 10cm (red)
1 x 20cm (10cm red, 10cm blue)
1x 30cm (10 cm red, 10 cm blue, 10 cm red)
1x 40cm (10 cm red, 10 cm blue, 10 cm red, 10 cm blue) and so on
1x 50cm
1x 60 cm
1x 70 cm
1x 80 cm
1x 90 cm
1x 100 cm

2 work mats.

Aim

Direct

Learn quantity and name names of  numbers 1 to 10

Indirect

Memorize numbers 1 to 10

Age

3 and a half  onwards (the child must have worked with the red rods)

Control of error

Rod number 1 of 10 cm will be the control of error. If the child has place the rods in correct order , rod number 1 added at the end of each bar will give the next bar. In this way.

You can also make a chart.

Presentation

Show the child the number rods and ask him if he wants to work with them.

Get two work mats and place them next to each other.

Ask the child to bring the rods one at a time and leave them on one of the rugs. Ask the child to carry the rods vertically not to harm anyone.

Ask the child to take the smallest rod and place it on the lower left side of the carpet that is empty.

Ask the child to take the smallest rod  (now number 2, red and blue) and place it on top of the first one starting with the red seccion.

Ask the child to take the smallest rod (now number 3) and place it on top of the others starting with the red seccion as well.

Carry on until you get to rod number 10. During all these steps we still do not mention number names.

If the child is losing interest ask him to return the rods and work mats to its place on  the shelves.

If the child shows interest continue. Start with bars 1, 2 and 3.

Take rod number 1.Grab it like this.

And say "One." Give it to the child so he can also do it.

Do the same with number two and three. Like this.

"One"

"Two"

"Three"

Separate rods 1, 2, and 3 from the rest and ask the child to give you rod number 2, for example. Then rod 1 and then rod 3. Repeat several times so the child can internalize the concept well.

Once you have done this several times take the next step.Still with rods 1,2 and 3.Point one of the 3 rods and ask the child to tell you the number name of that rod.

If its the first time you got here with the presentation with the specific child , I would finish the presentation here and ask the child to return the rods and the work mats  to their place on the shelf.

If the child is interested, continue. This time do rod number  4, 5 and 6.

If the child is interested, continue. This time do rod number 7, 8 and 9.

If the child is interested, continue. This time do all the number rods.

Remember is important that:

First step, say the number names in the manner I showed you before and then ask the child to do it.

Second step, ask the child to give you a certain number rod ( you say the name) and the child gets the rod.

Third step, point to a rod and the child must tell you the name..

There are many extensions or exercicis the child can do ones the child has internalized this concept but for today we are going to leave it here.

With the number rods the child not only learns to say 1, 2, 3 ... like a parrot but understands, touches, sees and builds the quantity that numbers represend and their respective number names.
