Tejer, el nuevo yoga / knitting is the new yoga

(scroll down for english)

knitting with a loom

Knitting is back and its benefits are endless. In fact it is said that knitting is the new yoga. It has relaxing properties. In addition you have the satisfaction of having created something with your own hands, amazing isn't it !

Maybe you're wondering right now, but this is an educational blog and not crafts one, and you're absolutely right. But let me tell you both concepts are compatible. Whether you are a parent , a Montessori guide or work in a traditional school you can and should introduce knitting with loom in your environment.

If you are a parent and want to teach your child how to knit this tutorial is the perfect first step towards it.

If you are a Montessori guide you probably already know that in a Montessori classrooms we often find creative activities which the child can access throughout the day. Knitting, with a loom or without one, is an activity you will find in my classroom any time of the year , in the arts and crafts shelf nicely organized on a tray.Like this.

If you work in a traditional school it may be more complicated to introduce this activity that has some many benefits, both physically and mentally. Here are some idea in how you could implement it in your school:

-Let the kids who have finish their exercises knit instead of waiting for their peers to finish.

-Have a Corner in class dedicated to this activity. An area where the child have access some time during the day.

- Use art classes to introduce this activity.

-Create a Corner in the playground or an area accessible during playground time where children can knit.

With a loom is very simple. Here is How.

Material you will need:

Wool
Round loom
 Loom hook

Purpose

Direct
Knit a beanie.

Indirect
Develop or improve concentration, relaxation, fine motor skills and pencil grip.

Tutorial

Introduce all the material you will need to the child.

Make a sliding knot to the outer nail of the loom.

To start take the thread and enclose each nail from the inside out to making a loop. Make sure that the opening of the thread is on the inside of the loom, like this:

Go around the loom again so that you have two circles in each nail.

Now with the hook pick up the first bottom loop you have made on the first nail and pass it over the top loop, inside the nail so that you have only one loop left on the nail.

Continue all around the first layer.

Lower all loops that are left on the nails down to give space for a new round. (I would help the child who is doing it for the first time up to here).

Now you can work one nail at a time. Make a loop from the inside to the outside on the first nail and pass the bottom loop over the top one, inside the nail.Repeat this process over and over .

The knit will begin to take form .

Depending on the measurement of the head ( baby, child ,adult) we will need it a longer or shorter knit. Once you feel that you've enough material to cover the head, it's time to close. Cut about 40 cm from the same thread you are using to knit the beanie. Like this.

Grab a needle and thread all the loops together, inside out. As below.

Pull the wool so that the top closes. Now make a couple of strong knots so that it does not undo.

And your beanie is finished.

Presentación Tabla de multiplicación Montessori / Multiplication board presentation

(scroll down for English)

Montessori Multiplication Board presentation

Does your child ( or student) have difficulties memorizing multiplication tables? If the answer is yes then this entry is perfect for you.

One of the most important characteristics of Montessori is that children learn mathematical concepts from concrete to abstract. This means that the child works with physical objects, objects that he can touch, manipulate, visualize, and little by little, go to the abstract, the mathematical concept in his mind. It is through repetition that the child internalizes the concept, understands it and later memorizes it. Memorizing comes after working with concrete material at the child's pace.

With Montessori's multiplication board the child will learn through repetition and memorize multiplication tables in a fun and effective way.

Presentation Montessori Multiplication Table

Material

Board with 100 holes distributed in 10 columns of 10
100 beads
Cards with numbers 1 to 10
Red disk

Aim

Direct

Introduce the child to the concept of multiplication.

Indirect

Memorize multiplication tables

Age

Age 5 onward (Very often this material is introduced at elementary school at age 6)

Control of error

Multiplication Chart always available to the child

Presentation

1. Show the child where to find this material on the shelf and bring it to a table.

2. Explain to the child that you are going to work with multiplication tables. Tell her that multiplication means to add several times the same number (if the child doesn't understand you at this point its ok, carry on)

3. Show the child the numbers 1 to 10 on the top row . Explain that these numbers will indicate the times that we must add a particular number.

4. Now show the child the cards with the numbers from 1 to 10 and explain her that these car will indicate us the number that we are adding.

5.Insert the number 1 card in the hole and the red disk on top of the number 1 on the top row. That will mean that we have number 1, 1 time. Get a bead  and place it in the hole of 1.1.

6. Write it in your paper 1x 1 = 1 (you can use the books that I provide later on this tutorial)

7. Move the disk to number 2, that means we have number 1, 2 times. Get a bead and place it in the hole 1,2.

8. Write the result in a paper or booklet 1x2 = 2

9. Repeat until 1x10

10. Return the beads to your box.

11. Take the number 2 card and insert it in the hole on the left . Place the red disk back on number 1.

12. Explain to the child that now we are going to multiply with number 2. Which means that we will add number 2,  several times.

13. Now we have number 2, 1 time. lace two bead in the holes 1,1 and 1,2.

14. Write in your paper 2x1 = 2

15.Repeat the process until you complete the table of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,9 and 10.

With Montessori multiplication board the child witness in a concrete way the concept of multiplication. Through repeating this exercise the child will begin to memorize multiplication tables naturally. As the child works with this material she will starts internalize the concept. It will get to a point where the child will get to lazy to count beads and she will start the abstract work at her own  pace on her own time.

For the child to practice multiplication tables I,m  leaving you a link of 3 books. The books vary in difficulty. You can print them  and use at home or in your classroom if you are a teacher. Introduce the child book number 1. Once the child has mastered book number 1, introduce book number 2 and then book number 3. multiplication booklets free print.

You can easily buy this material online. Prices vary from 12 to 50 euros depending on where you buy it.

If you don't want to buy this material you can print this template multiplication board template free printable.

Laminate the template and fill in the holes with a whiteboard marker. Or print a few templates and use each of them for a different times tables filling in the holes with stickers.

With this material your child will learn and memorize multiplication tables easily.

Decoración navidena hecha en casa/ DIY xmas ornaments

( scroll down for English)

DIY xmas ornament

Every year for Christmas we try to make home-made things as presents and for decorating. This year we choose a craft that we hadn't tried before and I can assure you  that it is worth it. We have done some beautiful stars. for our xmas tree.

You will need

Ingredients:
1 cup Corn flour
2 cups Bicarbonate of Soda
1/2 cup Water

Steps

1. Pour all ingredients into a bowl and mix well.

2. Transfer iit n a pot and heat it on a medium heat.

3.Don't stop mixing. Remove from the heat when the liquid mixture has a texture like mushed potato .

4. Take the dough out of the pot and let it cool down in another container.

5. Cover it with a lid or with a damp cloth.

6. Once the dough is cold, take it out of the plate and make a base as if you were making a pizza. With a cookie cutter in your desire shape, we choose a stars shape, cut out the shapes that will become your decorations.

7. We made some patterns on our stars by lightly pressing some leaves on it. You can use whatever you find in your house to press a pattern on your decorations a towel, a flower, branches, leaves, a jersei , anything.

8. Next we made the hole  to be able to hang it. We use a straw to make the hole, but a toothpick or a knife would also work.

9. Let your decorations dry for a couple of days on a tray. ( to speed the process you could also bake it in the oven untill dry)

10. Lastly add a beautiful string to be able to hang it from the tree. We chose a red thread to give it a Christmas touch.

And there you have it, a beautifull, easy and inexpensive hand made xmas decoration you can make with your kids or in the classroom.

( scroll down for english)

Pre writing with a light box

It is nothing new that that light boxes have become very popular. It is said that calm down jars and light boxes are Montessori but neither of them are. They do not appear in any of Montessori’s manuals, books or reviews neither in any of Mario Montessori’s books who continued with his mothers work.

From my point of view both, the light box and the calm down jar  lack  some of the basic elements that characterize Montessori materials.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m against them or that I think using them goes against Montessori principals so much so that I decided  to try, experiment and see for myself why so many people were including this material in their classrooms  or  homes and I decided to built one following a tutorial  I found online.

For the first week the light box became a favorite material for many of the children in the class but I have to say that after that week the light box didn’t see much light.

A few days ago one of the princesses, 3 and a half years old , in the middle of a pre-writing sensitive period, was tracing  some patterns on the sand tray (ziz-zag,curved and straight lines...) that we have next to our metal insets. When we had a eureka moment!

We rescued the light box, we got the patterns, papers , and colored pencils. This is what happened!

In a matter of 15 minutes she had already traced lots of them. When she finished she made a little
booklet. Using colored paper for a cover and stapling the whole lot.

What I liked the most , a part form dusting the light box, was to see  her self-confidence and how
proud she was of what she had just accomplished. In the video you can ear, whispering not
to disturb her fellow classmates, I did it! I did it! Which translates: I did! I did it!

If you have a light box in your house or in classroom I encourage you to try. Lots of fun for the
little ones.
