Knitting is back and its benefits are endless. In fact it is said that knitting is the new yoga. It has relaxing properties. In addition you have the satisfaction of having created something with your own hands, amazing isn't it !
Maybe you're wondering right now, but this is an educational blog and not crafts one, and you're absolutely right. But let me tell you both concepts are compatible. Whether you are a parent , a Montessori guide or work in a traditional school you can and should introduce knitting with loom in your environment.
If you are a parent and want to teach your child how to knit this tutorial is the perfect first step towards it.
If you are a Montessori guide you probably already know that in a Montessori classrooms we often find creative activities which the child can access throughout the day. Knitting, with a loom or without one, is an activity you will find in my classroom any time of the year , in the arts and crafts shelf nicely organized on a tray.Like this.
If you work in a traditional school it may be more complicated to introduce this activity that has some many benefits, both physically and mentally. Here are some idea in how you could implement it in your school:
-Let the kids who have finish their exercises knit instead of waiting for their peers to finish.
-Have a Corner in class dedicated to this activity. An area where the child have access some time during the day.
- Use art classes to introduce this activity.
-Create a Corner in the playground or an area accessible during playground time where children can knit.
With a loom is very simple. Here is How.
Material you will need:
Wool
Round loom
Loom hook

Wool
Round loom
Loom hook
Direct
Knit a beanie.
Indirect
Develop or improve concentration, relaxation, fine motor skills and pencil grip.
Tutorial
Introduce all the material you will need to the child.
Make a sliding knot to the outer nail of the loom.
To start take the thread and enclose each nail from the inside out to making a loop. Make sure that the opening of the thread is on the inside of the loom, like this:
Go around the loom again so that you have two circles in each nail.
Now with the hook pick up the first bottom loop you have made on the first nail and pass it over the top loop, inside the nail so that you have only one loop left on the nail.
Lower all loops that are left on the nails down to give space for a new round. (I would help the child who is doing it for the first time up to here).
Now you can work one nail at a time. Make a loop from the inside to the outside on the first nail and pass the bottom loop over the top one, inside the nail.Repeat this process over and over .
The knit will begin to take form .
Grab a needle and thread all the loops together, inside out. As below.
And your beanie is finished.
