Geometria Montessori. Presentación : linea, segmento y rayo/ Montessori Geometry presentation : line, line segment and ray

(scroll down for English)

Geometria Montessori.

Pruébalo, no te arrepentirás.

¡Divertido, Verdad! Las Matematicas no tienen porque ser aburridas.

Montessori Geometry presentation : line, line segment and ray.

Mathematics is one of the most fascinating areas in the Montessori method. In fact I only fully understood many mathematical concepts when studying to become a Montessori guide.
This is a presentation I enjoy every time I have the change to show it to the children, Its lots of fun and it can be done outdoors as well.It can be presented individually or in groups.
This presentation can be easily presented in a traditional school. Try it you will not regret it. And the children will remember the concept for years to come.

Material
A rope
Scissors
Paper and pen

Aim

To introduce the geometry concept of line, ray and line segment.

Age

7 onward (In a Montessori class this presentation is available to children from age 6. In a traditional school it depends of the State curriculum and/or the book that the school follows. The age where children are introduce to this concepts it may vary from 7 to 15 years old.)

Control of error

Chart with the concepts.

Presentation

Choose two students and give them the rope. Tell them to unroll it going on opposite directions. Tell the students to imagine that if they had a long enough rope they could reach the stars and the planets. In fact if the rope never finish it could go to infinity. (if you have models of planets place them where the students holding the rope are.

Tell them that mathematicians call this a line.

A lines is  a path that goes on forever in both directions it has no end points.

We represent it like this

Ask another child now to get the scissors and cut the rope at any point. What happened ? Now the line doesn't go on forever ! Explain them that we call this a ray.

A ray is a part of a line that beguine at a point and goes on forever in only one direction.

We represent it like this

Ask a child to hold the ray at the start point. Ask another child to cut the ray with the scissors again. What happened? Now the ray doesn't go on forever in any direction ! Explain them that we call this a line segment.

A line segment is a line that has a beginning point and an end point.

We represent it like this

Now ask another child to cut the rope again. Do as many line segments as you want an lay them down on the floor. Now ask a child to give you one of the line segments. The child will probably ask you which one. Tell him to pass you that one over there. When the Student gets it tell him that you weren't asking for that line segment you were asking for that other one.Let it go on for 3 or 4 line segments.

Tell the students that what just happened now also happened to the mathematicians back then. So they came up with a solution they were going to name the lines to make it easier to identify them. You could ask the kids to come up with some names.

Explain them that the easier way the Mathematicians found to name the lines was with the letters of the alphabet. ASk the children to make some levels , each of them with a letter of the alphabet in capitals.

Now start giving a letter to each end point of your line segments , or ask the children to do it, in alphabetical order.

And finally try again. Ask a child to bring you line segment AB, this way the child knows exactly which line segment you are asking for. Ask another one to bring you CD and so on.

You can ask the children to copy the definitions in their workbooks from the Chart.

Fun, right!

Barras numéricas DIY por menos de 15€ / Number rods DIY for under 15€

(scroll down for english)

Vas a necessitar

3 listones de madera
pintura azul
pintura roja

Number rods DIY

Number rods are one of the first steps in Mathematics area found in a Montessori classroom , the aim of the number rods is to introduce the concept of number.

When we introduce a child to the concept of number we must considered that the child will be learning 3 different things.

The quantity
The name of the number
The symbol that represents the name and that quantity.

We work the first 2 concepts with the number rods. Later we can introduce number symbols with   sandpaper numbers.

For those who are new to Montessori do not worry, I will soon publish the number rods presentation.

The  DIY cost is under 15€

You will need

3 boards
Blue paint
Red paint
Painter's tape

How to make your own number rods

First buy all the materials that you will need.
The slats can be bought at Bauhaus, Leroy Merlin, or at your local lumbar yard.
Cut your strips to size (Mine were cut at the store for no additional cost)

You will need
1 x 10 cm
1 x 20 cm
1 x 30 cm
1 x 40 cm
1 x 50 cm
1 x 60 cm
1 x 70 cm
1 x 80 cm
1 x 90 cm
1 x 100cm

Wipe them so there is no dust or sawdust. Paint them in red. I used spray paint.

Turn them around and paint the other side

They will look like this.

With the painter's tape cover the stripes that will be red so that you can paint the blues ones. The bar of 10 cm we stay as it is, because it needs to be red.
The 20 cm will have the first 10 cm stripe red, cover it with painter's tape and the second strip of 10 cm will be blue so don't cover it.
The 30 cm will have the first 10 cm stripe red (cover it) the second 10 cm strip blue (don't cover it) and the third 10 cm strip red (cover it)

And so on.

Paint it blue. Turn them around and paint the other side ones dry.

Once they are dry, remove the painter's tape.

And there you go you have made your own number rods. The hardest thing about this DIY is having the patience to wait for the paint to dry.

Tejer, el nuevo yoga / knitting is the new yoga

(scroll down for english)

knitting with a loom

Knitting is back and its benefits are endless. In fact it is said that knitting is the new yoga. It has relaxing properties. In addition you have the satisfaction of having created something with your own hands, amazing isn't it !

Maybe you're wondering right now, but this is an educational blog and not crafts one, and you're absolutely right. But let me tell you both concepts are compatible. Whether you are a parent , a Montessori guide or work in a traditional school you can and should introduce knitting with loom in your environment.

If you are a parent and want to teach your child how to knit this tutorial is the perfect first step towards it.

If you are a Montessori guide you probably already know that in a Montessori classrooms we often find creative activities which the child can access throughout the day. Knitting, with a loom or without one, is an activity you will find in my classroom any time of the year , in the arts and crafts shelf nicely organized on a tray.Like this.

If you work in a traditional school it may be more complicated to introduce this activity that has some many benefits, both physically and mentally. Here are some idea in how you could implement it in your school:

-Let the kids who have finish their exercises knit instead of waiting for their peers to finish.

-Have a Corner in class dedicated to this activity. An area where the child have access some time during the day.

- Use art classes to introduce this activity.

-Create a Corner in the playground or an area accessible during playground time where children can knit.

With a loom is very simple. Here is How.

Material you will need:

Wool
Round loom
 Loom hook

Purpose

Direct
Knit a beanie.

Indirect
Develop or improve concentration, relaxation, fine motor skills and pencil grip.

Tutorial

Introduce all the material you will need to the child.

Make a sliding knot to the outer nail of the loom.

To start take the thread and enclose each nail from the inside out to making a loop. Make sure that the opening of the thread is on the inside of the loom, like this:

Go around the loom again so that you have two circles in each nail.

Now with the hook pick up the first bottom loop you have made on the first nail and pass it over the top loop, inside the nail so that you have only one loop left on the nail.

Continue all around the first layer.

Lower all loops that are left on the nails down to give space for a new round. (I would help the child who is doing it for the first time up to here).

Now you can work one nail at a time. Make a loop from the inside to the outside on the first nail and pass the bottom loop over the top one, inside the nail.Repeat this process over and over .

The knit will begin to take form .

Depending on the measurement of the head ( baby, child ,adult) we will need it a longer or shorter knit. Once you feel that you've enough material to cover the head, it's time to close. Cut about 40 cm from the same thread you are using to knit the beanie. Like this.

Grab a needle and thread all the loops together, inside out. As below.

Pull the wool so that the top closes. Now make a couple of strong knots so that it does not undo.

And your beanie is finished.
